5 Things To Do When You Feel Emotionally Exhausted

If you are like me, you too have days when the only thing you feel like doing is to wrap yourself up in a cozy blanket, isolate yourself from the world and sit in front of the T.V. doing absolutely nothing. If you are a normal human, you have your days when you feel burned out and a lack of motivation. Let’s face it - we all have days when we are supercharged, pumped up and then there are the days when all we want to do is absolutely nothing.

Being emotionally exhausted, as defined by psychologists, is a state of feeling burned out with no energy to carry out mundane tasks. With a spirit consumed with lack of motivation, being drained is no different than trying to drive a car that is out of fuel.


Ever since we were kids, we were all taught about how to take care of our physical bodies but, what about our psychological and emotional problems? Our parents taught us to apply aid over physical wounds. Why’s nobody teaching how to aid emotional burnout?


HERE ARE 5 THINGS NOBODY TOLD YOU TO DO WHEN YOU FEEL EMOTIONALLY EXHAUSTED: [Last one’s my fav!]


#1. GIVE YOUR BRAIN A BREAK


Yes, the brain is just like a muscle, the more you train it the better it becomes. We have been told that a million times. But what we aren’t told is the truth that even this muscle requires a sufficient amount of relaxation. In order to enhance your brain’s performance, timely breaks are equally essential.


The various ways to relax your brain are:

Going for a walk

Practicing journaling

Listening to music

Hanging out with loved ones

Netflix and chill [goes without saying though ;)]


Research shows that listening to relaxing music actually reduces the levels of mental fatigue, creating space for energy and motivation.


#2. EVALUATE YOUR ENVIRONMENT


Here’s an easy-to-overlook factor that often leads you to physically, mentally and emotionally being burned out: the world around you. How often the environment or the people around you has put you up in a bad mood? And how often have the bad moods led you to a bad day?


One bad moment and the whole day becomes a bad day. A series of bad days is what kick starts the feeling of being drained and burned out. So next time, before you confront emotional exhaustion, do yourself a favor and evaluate your environment. What are the tasks that drain your energy?


There is a direct correlation between your energy and inspiration. Evaluate your routine and eliminate trivial tasks that exhaust your inspiration.


Because energy and inspiration are inversely proportional to emotional exhaustion.



#3. CHARGE UP YOURSELF WITH DOPAMINE AND SEROTONIN


Dopamine and serotonin are two of the chemical neurotransmitters present in the brain. Dopamine is the chemical, often called the motivation molecule, which is involved with reward, motivation, and many other functions.


It is basically the messenger which is released when you accomplish a particular task and it’s this molecule which makes you want to do more of such tasks.

Serotonin, often called the happy chemical, is the chemical involved with joy, happiness, and well-being.


When you are emotionally exhausted, even though staying in bed feels the most favorable option, hoop out and move your body. Indulge in tasks and activities that you love. Let it be painting or reading poetry or designing.


Do more of the activities that thrill your heart, change your mindset and shift your perspective.



#4. MEDITATE


One of the reasons why you feel emotionally exhausted is because you are not in sync with your emotions. A cluttered mind filled with undisciplined thoughts and emotions is the cause of a mental disruption.


Of all the mental and emotional problems, meditation is sure to be one of its best remedies. But if you are like me, you find it hard to meditate and struggle not sleeping midway. Here are some simple steps to meditate:


Find a quiet place to be by yourself:

A quiet spot where you wouldn’t be disturbed by people or noises or social media notifications.


Count from 1-5 as you inhale and exhale:

Most of the times, what makes it difficult for us to meditate is the drowsy feeling we get while we begin to inhale and exhale. To focus and not feel sleepy, count from 1-5 as you inhale and in the reverse order as you exhale.


Use free apps available for meditation:

There are a plethora of apps available for meditation like head-space, insight timer and many others.


#5. REFUEL YOUR INNER RESERVOIR


Be honest: how often do you complain about not being consistently motivated? As talked about above, being emotionally exhausted is no different than trying to drive a car went out of fuel. When sick, we are suggested to take a particular prescribed drug for our wellbeing. When emotionally exhausted, why not consume stuff which refuels you from within?

Whether it’s painting or listening to music or writing or watching videos on youtube or reading blogs, whatever it is that gives you a sense of completeness, don’t resist from doing it. Indulge in activities which evoke inspiration and fills you up with energy.


I’ll leave you with an insight for you:

If you can’t find a few minutes for yourself in 24 hours, you’re already losing it.

Ain’t it too tragic to have time for everything and anything but yourself?



CONCLUSION


There are a plethora of signs and symptoms of emotional exhaustion yet very few practical remedies that actually work. When exhausted, more than taking something in from the world around you, you need to give something - your attention.
